If you're sitting in a small fishing boat and see the toothy grin of an 18-foot great white shark looming in the water, then to our mind there is only one thing you should do.
And it isn't take out an iPhone and start to film it.
Matt Garrett from Boston disagreed. On a recent fishing trip with friends off the coast of North Carolina he noticed the enormous carnivorous Carcharodon carcharias swimming nearby, and instead of driving away immediately he decided to capture the footage on his phone.
The men were about 25 miles from the shore when the fish stopped biting and the shark arrived.
The footage shows the shark in terrifying proximity to the boat. But while the animal later hit the boat with its tail it did not cause any injuries - mainly because everyone kept their feet out of the water.
Garrett told CNN: "Off in the distance we saw two big fins sticking up in the water. We thought it was a couple Atlantic Sunfish or two dolphins. As the two fins approached a little closer, we noticed it was a giant shark.”
