The Golden Globes 2012 winners went largely as expected last night in Los Angeles, with many of the big screen contenders scoring. George Clooney scooped Best Actor for his role in The Descendents while Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams took Best Actress for playing two icons of the last century in The Iron Lady and My Week with Marilyn respectively.

Meanwhile Jean Dujardin scored Best Actor in a musical or comedy for his role in The Artist. Madonna also gets to add a Golden Globe to her collection of awards with Best Original Song for W.E. There was a clutch of Brit successes, with Downton Abbey taking the award for best television mini series, while Kate Winslet and London-born actor Idris Elba were also recognised gongs on the night and Brit Ricky Gervais hosted the prestigious ceremony for a third consecutive year.
But while many of the night's winners were expected, the biggest surprise was the toned down performance from Gervais, who looked like he was attempting to shock the audience by being polite.
