The motive for the murders of Avtar Kolar, 62, and his wife Carole, 58, was nothing to do with their policeman son's job, police work with gangs, or the theft of gold, though a number of items have been recovered from the family home.
West Midlands Police said that a lump hammer found at the scene was used in the murders and that Avtar and Carole Kolar died from their head injuries. Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Jupp, told a press conference:
"I can confirm that a lump hammer was found at the scene and that was the cause of the injuries."
Post-mortem examinations have revealed that both died as a result of blunt-force trauma to the head
The statement came hours after the news that Lithuanian national Rimvydas Liorancas, 37, was arrested and charged with murdering the Birmingham couple. Police said that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with these murders.
Liorancas, who was arrested at a Birmingham address on Monday, was the third person to be arrested on suspicion of the double murder.
A 41-year-old man questioned at the weekend was released without charge and a 24-year-old man is on police bail.
Avtar Kolar, 62, and his wife Carole, 58 had been married for 40 years and have four children. They were found at the Friary Road property by their policeman son Jason.
At an emotional press conference the day after the couple were found dead, their son and daughter Michelle Kirwan, 39, and her brother, Avtar Kolar, 32, held hands and sobbed as they said their hearts had been "broken forever".
"The devastating impact of such a senseless crime has been far-reaching and the comfort drawn by the family from words of friends, the community and further afield has been much appreciated by them," Mr Jupp said.
