What to watch on TV this weekend...
Friday
Melvyn Bragg on Class and Culture - 9pm, BBC2
If anybody is living proof that Britain is now a classless society with all the social liquidity that implies, it is Melvyn Bragg himself, sorry, Lord Bragg, Labour peer, doyen of the arts, former South Bank show presenter, novelist, and - before any of that - Cumbrian working-class stock. Bragg sets out to prove if he is typical of our new mercantile, consumerist society.
Benidorm - 9pm, ITV1
With no little irony, tonight's other-channel fare provides more goings-on in Benidorm, where Lord Bragg presumably won't be going for his summer break. This week sees new manager Joyce Temple Savage (Sherrie Hewson) try - in vain? - to bring some of Lord Bragg's 'class' to the Solana resort, by cranking up a bit of Liszt to waft out over the loungers. Meanwhile, there's a problem of lost luggage - of course - but cross-dressing Les is on hand to offer "full access to my wardrobe" for those finding themselves without beachwear.
Saturday
Let's Dance For Sports Relief - 7.20pm, BBC1
The Only Way Is Essex stars Amy Childs and Harry Derbidge, actor and comedian Miles Jupp, comedienne Ava Vidal and legendary ski-jumper Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards join Alex Jones and Steve Jones on the dance floor for charity. It's no Strictly, but it will help fill the gap a little. Alexandra Burke and Ed Sheeran provide the music.
The Story Of Musicals - 8.20pm, BBC2
This new series explores how Britain has influenced musical theatre across the world, focusing on the years following the Second World War with contributions from lots of big theatrical names.
Sunday
Homeland - 9.00pm, Channel 4
It was Sunday's recommended viewing last week when it debuted, and the intense terrorism drama, starring Damian Lewis and Clare Danes, has lots more to offer. This week's episode sees Carrie's surveillance of Brody continue as he struggles to live a normal life at home with his wife and family, suffering hallucinations and post-traumatic stress disorder brought on by his eight years in al-Qaeda captivity.
The Oscars - 11.30pm, Sky Movies
It's the biggest night in the showbiz calendar on Sunday as the red carpet is rolled out in LA for the 84th Annual Academy Awards. If you can stay awake late enough to watch the show, then red carpet coverage begins at 11.30pm on Sky Movies and the ceremony will be shown from 1.30am. Will you be tuning in to see if The Artist wins again? Let us know below.
