It was all about the Oscars this week, as Hollywood played host to the biggest night on the showbiz calendar. Silent film The Artist scooped the prize for Best Picture, which, after its domination throughout awards season, came as little surprise. The film's French star Jean Dujardin picked up the Best Actor gong, swore in French, apologised to his disapproving mama and was subsequently mobbed on his return to Paris, while Meryl Streep, dressed in what looked like an Oscar statuette, won Best Actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
Talk quickly turned to the best and worst dressed stars on the red carpet - Jennifer Lopez looked stunning, but Emma Stone made a fatal fashion faux-pas. However, all these stories were eclipsed by the mischief-making antics of one Mr Sacha Baron Cohen.
The Bruno actor decided to arrive on the red carpet dressed as his latest character - General Admiral Aladeen from The Dictator - despite being warned against it by the Academy.
The Dictator was unabashed, comforting Seacrest with: "You can say you are wearing Kim Jong-il" - before he was unceremoniously bundled off by stone-faced security guards.
Back across the pond, Florence Welch broke Adele's award-winning run when she beat the Brit and Grammy winner to Best Solo Artist at the NME Awards.Flamboyant singer Welch also won Best Track for Shake It Out, while Noel Gallagher was declared a "Godlike Genius" at the ceremony.
The event was somewhat overshadowed by the news that The Monkees' frontman Davy Jones had died, aged 66, of a heart attack that evening. Kasabian paid tribute to the Daydream Believer singer by singing the Monkees theme song as they accepted the gong for Best British Band.
Meanwhile, Jones' bandmates expressed their sadness at his sudden passing. Micky Dolenz said he had been left "bewildered" and Peter Tork said in a statement on Facebook: "His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always. My deepest sympathy to Jessica and the rest of his family. Adios, to the Manchester Cowboy. Peace and love, Peter T."
And finally, the world - or maybe just millions of teenage girls - celebrated the 18th birthday of teen superstar Justin Bieber.The Baby singer has had a meteoric rise to fame - since posting videos of himself singing on YouTube, he's now had two number one albums, racked up 57 music awards and is reported to have earned over $57m in the last year - not bad for a boy critics called a "one-hit wonder".
