The Apprentice 2012 Preview: Episode 2 - Gadget Task Proves Too Much For Some Candidates

The Apprentice Preview: Too Much Like Hard Work?

Get your thinking caps on - tonight's Apprentice sees Lord Sugar's candidates tasked with inventing a new gadget.

At the crack of dawn, the motley crew of hopefuls are summoned to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where Lord Sugar is waiting to brief them on this week’s task.

He explains: “This place was set up over 150 years ago as a source of inspiration for British designers and manufacturers. What you’re going to do this week is design a new gadget, a household gadget. The success of this task is going to be in that product concept you’re coming up with, because everything after that is going to be a waste of time if the product sucks.”

The boys' team, Phoenix, jump straight in but squabble over what to make - a waste compactor bin or rubber gloves with scourers on the side? Both very glamorous inventions.

Meanwhile, the girls cause chaos after changing their minds at the last minute. Laura suggests a splash screen to put on the side of the bath to stop children from splashing, while Katie comes up with a tap cosy enabling people to put their feet up in the bath. And as they try to make a decision, an unhelpful Maria falls asleep in the car.

With the prototypes delivered overnight, the next morning is time for the pitches to the two retail giants. The boys have branded their compost compactor Ecopress and the girl’s splash screen is Splish Splash, with one side acting as a splashproof guard and the other including crayon and shapes for bath time play.

But Sterling become unstuck when it comes to figures. Expressing her embarrassment afterwards, Katie says: "It was just a bit of a mess. Mentioning a million units, you should have seen their face, that’s a nine million pound order. I don’t want to be laughed at.”

Meanwhile, in team Phoenix Azhar and Stephen are selected to deliver the pitches, which doesn’t go down well with Duane who had the original idea for the product. Watching over the events, Nick Hewer observes: “What nonsense that the inventor was forbidden to speak, it was extraordinary. Stephen was standing there and from the back, Duane broke ranks and did speak, and they liked his passion.”

Tune in to find out who will be next to hear Lord Sugar’s immortal words: You’re Fired! tonight (28th March) at 9pm on BBC One.
