It shocked many (myself included) when Jane McEvoy, the assertive Irish businesswoman with the IMPECCABLE CV was booted off The Apprentice last night, but it didn't come as a surprise to the lady herself:
"I was expecting to get fired, but I was really upset. I was pleased to be going home, so it was a mixture of emotions. A few tears, and then I wiped them away, got on with things."
Why do you think you got fired?
I don't know, a lot of it had to do with personality, Lord Sugar has to find someone he thinks he can work, I don't think he felt he could work with me and hat was the problem, but it's his money.
Who do you blame for your dismissal?
It was really difficult in that last task, I don't think anybody in our team really performed, not just the final three that were brought in. It was just completely wrong from the start, I hadn't a clue what I was doing, I know nothing about vintage furniture... I was completely out of my comfort zone. So I think there was blame on a lot of parts, and I wouldn't dare to pinpoint it on anymore. Anybody actually could have gone, but I went.
What do you think of Lord Sugar and his sidekicks?
I spent the least time with Lord Sugar, you really only see him in the boardroom, so I was fortunate to spend a lot of time in there. But he is an amazing businessman, and it would have been amazing, but it's not happening... and it's no reflection on him.
Nick is hilarious, he is just brilliant, his looks and his words are just priceless.
Karren - I admire any woman in business because it is difficult. I don't think she liked me very much, that's her opinion that's what she's paid... I don't know if she's paid... but that's what she's there for, and it's up to me to go and prove they're wrong.
What was the highlight?
The food task was my best bit - I think a lot was edited out - the food area was where I excelled. I took charge of the production, six batches of chutney and it sold really well, I costed that too... I felt really at home, that was the task I enjoyed most... " (at this piont, Jane reels off the figures, leaving me wondering why the sales were such a problem for her last night over the vintage stock business...
And it was a dream come true - I've always wanted to go to Silverstone and drive a car, so I couldn't believe that was the task I won and I got to do that. It made you want to sell lots more products and make a success of yourself.
What's next?
I'm sorting out my marketing company to launch my new baby soups, organic and allergy-free, based on the characters in my baby son Harry's world, designed to make feeding your baby fun. (Pitch down pat.)
What did you learn?
I met some really amazing people, I think I admire a lot of them and I got an extra drive to do something that's been in my head since Harry was a small baby, but now I just want to go out there, sell a million units and prove them all wrong.
Go, Jane. Who needs The Apprentice...?
