Johan Cruyff Turns 65 Today - Here's The Best Of Holland's Total Football Master

Sixty-five years ago today, Hendrik Johannes Cruijff, known universally as Johan Cruyff, was born in Amsterdam.

Not just one of the greatest players to have played football, the Dutch master is also one of the most iconic.

The number 14 shirt has such special resonance that his son, Jordi, requested "CRUYFF 14" be replaced with "JORDI 14" as he struggled to make an impact at Manchester United.

At the 1974 World Cup, when Holland's Total Football wowed the world from West Germany, even Cruyff's own kit was tailored to his brand.

Petrifying Uruguay

Holland's kit was supplied by adidas, but Cruyff was nevertheless a Puma player, so rather than sport three stripes on his shirt like everyone else, he wore two. But he could get away with it.

Aside from being synonymous with a number, he also has his own skill. The Cruyff Turn, executed in '74 during a goalless draw against Sweden, bamboozled Jan Olsson and left the watching world gaping at its innovative ingenuity. Olsson doesn't mind, though.

"I never get tired of seeing it, no way. He could have done it to anyone and I feel lucky it was me that day, lucky that I got to meet and play against the great Johan Cruyff."

Great is far too overused a word in football, but it applies to Cruyff. Three times a European Cup winner with Ajax's awesome early 1970s side, he then guided Barcelona to their first ever success in the competition as manager in 1992 at Wembley.

Learning from Dutch genius Rinus Michels at Barca

He scored 33 goals in 48 appearances for Oranje between 1966 and 1977, unfortunately featuring in just that one World Cup. But his philosophy has spawned a generation of footballing idealism which has arguably inspired Spain's recent successes.

Sit back and enjoy the craft of Cruyff...
