Rare is it that Patrick Swayze is topped, but his radical surfer Bodhi, of Point Break fame, has been beaten to the honour of riding the "gnarliest" wave ever by Haleiwan Garrett McNamara.

Guinness have recognised the 44-year-old pro surfer for catching a 78-foot wave off the coast of Portugal, saying the November run beats a 2008 record by more than a foot.

Taking on the enormous wave at Nazaré, McNamara rode the risk of being drowned or crushed by the deluge of water.

However his achievement was confirmed by a panel of experts at the annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
