European Championship 2012 Build-Up: Euro 96 In Pictures (GALLERY)

GALLERY: Remembering Euro 96

English football changed thanks to Euro 96. Suddenly the game was family-friendly, demand for tickets soared, and prices soon rocketed.

As detrimental as the tournament has retrospectively been for supporters who were long since aboard the bandwagon, it was a vibrant tournament.

Terry Venables' England weren't as good as some have since stated. Flat against Switzerland, fortunate against Scotland and Spain while unfortunate versus Germany, their most comprehensive display was the 4-1 victory against Holland. Patrick Kluivert's "consolation" in fact ensured the Scots' elimination, despite their 1-0 defeat of Switzerland at Villa Park.

But it was the ominous scenario which materialised. Germany finally reaped silverware for the first time since their unification, as Jurgen Klinsmann climbed the 39 steps and pressed the Queen's flesh before hoisting the Henri Delaunay trophy.
