Gareth Bale's Agent Says Tottenham Hotspur's Champions League Absence Is A 'Problem' For Winger

Bale Causes Spurs A New 'Problem'

Gareth Bale's agent has insisted it is a "problem" for the Tottenham Hotspur winger that the club did not qualify for the Champions League last season.

Spurs finished fourth at the end of the 2011/12 Premier League campaign, but Chelsea's success in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich has thwarted the chance of the Lilywhites playing in Europe's top club competition.

Bale, 22, has made clear his desire to play in the Champions League on a consistent basis and has been scouted by Barcelona. Although his agent Jonathan Barnett doesn't expect his client to move to Catalonia.

Asked about a second successive season without Champions League football by Catalan-based newspaper Sport, Barnett replied: "It is clear that this is a problem.

"The big European clubs already know how much it would take to do a deal and therefore if you are interested you know what kind of offer has to be put on the table."

"I think it's too expensive for Barca. To my knowledge, Barca have not made any offer for him. It seems that Barca are working on the signing of Jordi Alba, a cheaper option."

Bale scored 12 times for Tottenham last season and was included in the PFA Team of the Year for the campaign.

Signed for £5m from Southampton when he was just 17 in 2007, Bale produced an excellent debut at Old Trafford but his debut Premier League campaign was cut short by injury during a home defeat to Birmingham City in December.

Bale never played in a league win for the club until the 25th time of asking in September 2009, when he arrived as an 85th minute substitute at White Hart Lane in a 5-0 win over Burnley.

But from 2010 onwards he has become a fixture in the side and, along with Luka Modric, is Tottenham's most valuable player.
