Three-year-old Jia Wanyan was suffering from retinoblastoma, a tumour that develops in the cells of the retina, known as RB.
RB has one of the best cure rates of childhood cancers in the developed world, with every nine out of 10 sufferers surviving into adulthood.
However Jia's parents, who work as labourers, couldn't afford medical treatment for her tumour. A hospital in China stepped in to operate on the little girl for free after hearing about her plight.

Surgeons removed the eye completely during a three hour operation because the tumour had grown so large. Jia was then fitted with an artificial eye.
Chief surgeon Lei Delin said the procedure was a complete success.
Before the surgery was offered free of charge, Jia's dad said: "We took her to visit several local hospitals, and doctors said the treatment cost could be more than one million Yuan, and curable possibilities are minimal. How could we afford such a huge number?"
Jia will now undergo chemotherapy to kill off any remaining cancer cells. Follow-ups will be required to check that the disease hasn't returned.
