EMMY AWARDS: Ricky Gervais Picks On Louis CK, Then Apologises

Ricky Gervais just can't help himself at Awards nights, thankfully.

The British comedic actor and writer was on his usual grinning/baiting form when he took to the stage at the Emmy Awards to present the award for Directing in a Variety Special - as he said, "Here's the big one."

After musing that it was "so much better than the Golden Globes" which he has presented three times, despite "wishing you were at the Golden Globes so you could have a drink", he got down to the business of announcing the nominees.

He stopped when he got to Louis CK, who had already won two trophies during the evening, one for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and one for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.

Gervais added, "If he wins he’s a better comedian than me."

The presenter was then seemingly heckled, at which point he added, "I’m an atheist and that worried me."

In the end, the award went to one of the crew actually working on the Emmys, Glenn Weiss for his previous work on the Tony Awards, and he received his gong in the studio gallery, which seemed a bit bizarre. And Gervais carried on...

"Well done to everyone in that category, especially Louis, the second best comedian in the world.

"He’s been turning around every night, every time he won, so…”
