Emile Heskey may be a figure of ridicule in England, but the 34-year-old striker's new club Newcastle Jets have sold out of shirts bearing his name in Australia.
The Jets have had to place an order for 5,000 more replicas bearing the name of the former Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham City and WIgan Athletic striker.
When once England as a sporting nation was a figure of ridicule in the eyes of Aussies, it is arguably the reverse now. Not only has their cricket team lost two successive Ashes series 3-1, but their football fans are actually excited by Heskey's arrival. An estimated 1,000 new fans have signed up in lieu of the signing.
You know the name, you know the number
Heskey moved Down Under after he was released by Aston Villa in the summer following three-and-a-half-years with the midlands club.
Despite rumours linking him with a move to League Two club Macclesfield Town, the former England striker has followed Alessandro del Piero to Australia's A-League.
He told Sky Sports News: “I believe their national sport is rugby, but they think that football can actually compete with that. That’s how they sold it to me."
“Not just myself, but Del Piero as well. I’ve seen the buzz that he’s created going over there and hopefully do the same and help out anyway I can.”
