Europe's dramatic Ryder Cup victory, as euphoric as it was, was also tinged with sadness as the victors - particularly tearful captain José María Olazábal - remembered the late Seve Ballesteros.

Olazábal was on the 17th fairway when Martin Kaymer sunk the putt which retained the cup for Europe, and immediately looked to the heavens in what was an obvious reference to Ballesteros, who died last year after suffering from a brain tumour.

Once he had reached the 18th, Olazábal gave an emotional interview in which he declared, fighting back the tears: "This one's for him."
