The singer and pal of Justin Timberlake, told US web-based panel show 'The Rubin Report' that one member of the hit British band is "probably gay".
Bass, who now hosts the 'Dirty Pop With Lance Bass' radio show, said of the boy band sensations: "Statistically speaking, one probably is [gay]."
He continued: "The market is 100 percent young women and they fantasize about these [One Direction] guys. Then you have the record labels and everyone kind of grooming you to make sure that you don't even mention that you have a girlfriend."
He then noted: "So screw the fact that you're going to come out as being gay - it ruins their whole business plan."
Last year, One Direction member Louis Tomlinson sounded off on media speculation over his apparent "bromance" with bandmate Harry Styles.
"We want to joke around, but there seems to be a different rumour every time we do anything," he said at the time. "I act the same way with Harry as I do [with] any of the other boys and my childhood friend Stan."
Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Styles and Tomlinson recently announced they have been working on their third album, the follow-up to 2012's 'Take Me Home', while they are on the road for their 'Take Me Home' tour.
They delighted fans with the news that it should be out before Christmas.
The album's release will follow their 3D documentary film 'This is Us', which has been directed by Morgan Spurlock and is due to hit cinemas this summer.
