A nine-year-old girl has died after a freak gust of wind blew the trampoline she was sitting on more than 150 feet into the air.

Oaklee Sidwell had been playing on the trampoline in her back garden in Garfield County, Utah. She and her friends had finished bouncing on it, and she was sitting on it putting her shoes back on when the sudden gust lifted it into the air.

Associated Press reports Oaklee was thrown from the equipment before it came to rest 'half a football field away'.

She was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a larger facility in Salt Lake City, where she died from her injuries.

A spokeswoman for the mayor of Garfield County said that it was a 'tragic' and 'freak' accident, and confirmed that Oaklee's trampoline had been properly assembled, anchored to the ground and was surrounded by a safety net.

She added that the whole county had been affected by the little girl's death.
