If failing your exam wasn't horrible enough, now you've got the fear of your questionable answers being published to the world.

Yep, it's that time again - the Times Higher Education magazine is rounding up the exam howlers of the year.

Our personal favourite so far has to be the submission from John Milliken, a lecturer in education at the University of Ulster, who was told by one confident student: "the [hole in the] ozone layer was caused by arseholes".

"He probably meant aerosols, but then…maybe not," Dr Milliken added.

Another of his students wrote on a paper on vehicle emissions: "In future all cars [will] be fitted with Catholic converters."

Indeed.

Some other blinders included:

"Google is one of the two main suppositories of data in the world." - submitted by Verity Brack, IT programme director at the University of Sheffield

"Globalisation has led to a growing interconnectedness between a small-scale people and larger-scale cities across the globe." - submitted Suzanne Reimer, lecturer in geography at Southampton University

"Octopuses are intelligent because they have been found to be able to predict the winners of football matches during the World Cup." - submitted by Britta Osthaus, lecturer in psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University.

"Hitler’s role in the Second World War is often overlooked." - submitted by Alix Green, lecturer in history at the University of Hertfordshire.
