In the age of budget airlines, you could be forgiven for thinking there are no undiscovered gems in Europe. Forgiven, but no less wrong.
For those suffering from that special type of frustration caused by jetting across Europe only to find yourself seated next to a loud British hen do, we offer a travel tonic: Sibiu, Romania.
Situated in the centre of the country, this Transylvanian city offers the increasingly rare experience of discovery in Europe. This is not, however, to say that visiting Sibiu is in anyway roughing it.
In 2007 the city served as joint European Capital of Culture with Luxembourg. The investment left it with a selection of modern hotels like the Ramada, a gorgeously restored centre square and a well organised tourism sector. Add to that a highly educated population which makes the language barrier almost non-existent, and it's clear that Sibiu is a city on the verge of a tourism boom.
Take our advice and go now, because in a few years if you come crying to us about finding L plates around every corner, we'll have no qualms about replying "told you so!".
