A couple who named their newborn son Krimson Tyde say they're shocked by the backlash they've received online.

Summer and Steven Steele, who are from the small town of Andalusia, Alabama, named their son after their favourite American football team, Alabama University's Crimson Tide (rather than the 1995 submarine movie starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman - or that time of the month. Duh!)

The baby boy, Krimson Tyde Steele, was born on December 17 and his story quickly went viral after being posted to Twitter. But the reactions were less than complimentary.

One Tweeter wrote: "Why? I would despise my parents if they called me Krimson Tyde."

Gawker Media's sports news site Deadspin even published a list of baby names on Monday
