Golden Globes 2014: Five Trends To Know

Golden Globes 2014: Five Trends To Know

Aside from the odd red carpet mishap (yep, that's you Lena Dunham in your strapless Zac Posen dress), the gowns on show at the Golden Globes 2014 looked flawless.

As always, there were a few common themes. Here are the four key trends from the night below:

1. Ladies in red

You think you're going to be the only one who shows up wearing red and then three other Hollywood stars go and turn heads in the statement shade too.

Berenice Bejo looked red hot in a ruffled Giambattista Valli gown and Emma Watson got everyone talking by wearing navy trousers under her Dior Couture dress. Best Actress winner Amy Adams looked radiant in a plunging Valentino design and the star of 12 Years A Slave Lupita Nyong'o topped all the best dressed lists in Ralph Lauren.

2. Nice and neautral

Following on from last year's nude trend, there was a definite thing for neutral colours at the 2014 awards. Margot Robbie, Zooey Deschanel and Kerry Washington proved that magnolia isn't boring and Jennifer Lawrence? She just looked amazing in her whiter than white Dior dress.

3. Sparkle!

The Golden Globes wouldn't be the Golden Globes if it wasn't for a bit of sequin. Camila Alves dazzled in a top to toe sequin design by Dolce & Gabbana and mum-to-be Olivia Wilde followed suit in an emerald dress by Gucci. Naomi Watts went for the subtle shimmer approach in a slinky Tom Ford number and Mila Kunis was covered in crystals thanks to her glitzy gown, also by Gucci.

4. Monochrome (aka the red carpet trend that won't go away)

It's a classic colour combo and it's a fail-safe choice for an awards ceremony. So it's not really surprising that monochrome made a resurgence this year. While Downton's Laura Carmichael and Hayden Panettiere opted for graphic print styles, Girls star Zosia Mamet dared to wear a floral print. And Julia Roberts? She's been to so many of these things now she stuck to the most sensible option out there - a crisp white shirt by Dolce & Gabbana.

5. Cute clutches

Every girl needs a clutch bag on the red carpet (where else is she going to hold her lipstick?) This year, the bags were box-shaped, teeny tiny in size and most importantly, they looked really cute. Our favourites? Helen Mirren's satin green clutch (she clashed it with her baby pink nail polish) and Zoe Saldana's candy pink style.
