The mum of Mikaeel Kular has appeared in court charged with murdering her three-year-old son, who went missing last week.

Rosdeep Kular, 33, appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court for a hearing that lasted just a few minutes.

She has also been charged with 'attempting to defeat the ends of justice' in connection with the death of Mikaeel.

Ms Kular - who was referred to by her married name of Adekoya - did not enter a plea. Following the hearing she was remanded in custody until her next court appearance on January 28.

Mikaeel was reported missing by his mother at 7.15am last Thursday. She claimed she put him to bed the night before and was shocked to discover he had disappeared overnight with his coat, shoes and gloves.

Hundreds of police officers and neighbours searched desperately for the child for two days before his body was found in woods a few yards behind his aunt Pandeep Kular's bungalow in Kirkcaldy, Fife – 25 miles from his Edinburgh home.

Ms Kular and her five children had previously lived at the address. A neighbour told the BBC that Mikaeel and his twin sister were born while the family was living there.
