Artist Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico in 1907 and had her own idea of what beauty was and could be.
Her signature style? Centre parted, slicked back hair, colour-drenched clothes and bold eyebrows, documented in her arresting self-portraits. She once said: "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best."
After a severe car accident as a teenager which scarred her physically and mentally for the rest of her life, Frida took up painting and at 22, married Mexican muralist Diego Rivera who was 20 years her senior.
The couple's life was exciting but turbulent and her art work is undeniably reflective of this. To this day, Kahlo remains an icon in both art and fashion.
