Marawa the Amazing, the hula-hooping phenomenon with her own hula-hooping troupe (The Majorettes; you can catch them entertaining around London), loves to mix vintage styles with contemporary pieces.
A fan of 1940s, 1950s and 1970s silhouettes - she's never too far from a jumpsuit - the multiple Guinness World Record Holder (she can hula hoop 160 hoops at once!), likes to shake up her everyday style with a statement accessory: tassel earrings (she has them in every colour of the rainbow), funky hats, oversized sunnies and Terry de Havilland sandals. She's also got a hula hoop for every occasion...
What got you interested in vintage fashion? Was there a specific person or item of clothing that got you hooked?
1950s trousers - because they fit ! I have a small waist and strong legs so 'normal' off-the-rack trousers never fit! I remember buying vintage trousers for the first time and being AMAZED at how well they were tailored and how well they fit - I was convinced I was born in the wrong era - and felt like I had uncovered the most amazing fashion secret!
Where are your favourite places to source vintage items?
Charity shops in posh neighbourhoods - they always have great brands, amazing cuts and fabrics. Also, anywhere out of town (smaller country villages) and whenever I'm travelling I always check out the local stores.
What are some of your tips for styling vintage outfits?
Always dry clean the mothballs away - you never want to know it's vintage from its smell. And mix and match - I like using vintage stuff mixed with new pieces. Head-to-toe vintage runs the risk of looking like an extra in a Poirot... but that can be OK, too!
What are some of your top tips for scouring the best vintage pieces?
Take your time - and not your best friend who is the same size.
What is your favourite performing look?
GLITTER! As much as possible. Kind of like a human piñata. Showgirl glam!
Does your stage style influence your day-to-day style?
For sure - I like to add a big bow to my hair sometimes. You feel really plain going back to normal clothes after a day in costume.
