Teen's Instagram Account Suspended Over Fat-Positive Underwear Selfies

Instagram has suspended Ohio student Samm Newman's account after she posted "fat-positive" underwear selfies.

The 19-year-old's account was removed for violating the social media's community guidelines against sharing photos with nudity. But here's the thing. She wasn't naked in any of her pictures.

Samm's account was shut down after she posted a mirror selfie of herself dressed in just a bra and polka dot briefs. "I didn't find them or the bra at all inappropriate," she told MS News Now.

"They covered me entirely, and I've seen pictures like that all over Instagram." The size 24 student claimed her account was taken down purely because of her weight.

"I'm a big girl, I'm proud, and I post lots of body love," she explained. "How confident can you be if you keep censoring yourself because people don't want to look at you?"

This latest news has us wondering who it is, sitting in their ivory tower, that gets to decide which pictures do and which pictures don't violate their code of conduct. A picture of Cara Delevingne totally naked with just a road sign to cover her modesty isn't nudity, but apparently Samm's mirror shot is.

The mind, it boggles.

While Samm is obviously pissed at Instagram's apparent double standards she hopes her story will make a difference to others.

"I'm going to make a difference in the world, regardless of whether Instagram cooperates or not," she concluded.
