Artist Transforms Cartoon Characters Into Breast Cancer Survivors, Shows 'Every Woman Is Beautiful, Even After A Mastectomy'

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, yet the frequency of these experiences is often not reflected in popular culture.

To combat this one artist has transformed cartoon characters into breast cancer survivors.

AleXsandro Palombo's 'Survivor' series shows well-known female cartoon personalities including Snow White, Wonder Woman and Marge Simpson after undergoing either a mastectomy or double mastectomy.

He wants to show that "every woman is beautiful, even after a mastectomy".

Palombo was inspired to start the project after one of his colleagues passed away from breast cancer.

"You must be very strong to be able to react psychologically and accept the new appearance of your own body," he told HuffPost Women.

"My message is one of hope and courage. I believe that we must also create awareness to young people and teach health education.

"Art is a powerful way to raise awareness about important social issues. I am an artist who believes and fights for the right of expression, freedom and equality."
