Squadron Visit To End Royal Week

Squadron Visit To End Royal Week

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will meet RAF reservists during a visit to a squadron today.

They are due to meet members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force's (RAuxAF) 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron in the Scottish capital.

The trip will round off the royal couple's annual week-long programme of formal engagements in Scotland.

603 Squadron is the younger of the RAF Reserves' two specialised police units, according to the RAF website. It converted to its current role in 2013 as part of the Future Reserves 2020 programme.

RAF police duties include safeguarding people and equipment from enemy, criminal and terrorist threats. They also take on a number of roles related to air transport security.

The Queen - in her role as Honorary Air Commodore - and the Duke will meet squadron personnel before Philip presents reservists with an operational service medal.

The royal couple will also meet a retired Second World War 603 Squadron Spitfire pilot during the visit.

This week's programme of engagements has seen the Queen take part in events in Glasgow and Edinburgh, including hosting a garden party for about 8,000 people.
