Man In Court On Railway Safety Charge After Train Hit Car On Level Crossing

A man has appeared in court charged with obstructing the railway with intent to endanger safety after a train crashed into a car at a level crossing.

Jonathan Mather, from Derby, was remanded in custody until August by magistrates sitting in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire

The 35-year-old, of Pearl Close, Oakwood, was arrested on Monday after a CrossCountry passenger service hit an empty vehicle at Claymills, Burton.

Emergency crews were alerted to the incident at 7.25pm and assessed five of the 42 people on board the train, including three who complained of back pain.

Mather will next appear at Stafford Crown Court on August 10.
