The ‘Bad Blood’ singer started one of the most well-documented Twitter spats in pop culture history on Tuesday night, when she accused Nicki of “pitting women against each other”.
Taylor’s comments were in retaliation to a series of tweets from Nicki, that she wrongly believed to be about her, and the ‘1989’ creator has now admitted to misunderstanding the situation, tweeting:
I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki.July 23, 2015
Within the hour, Nicki graciously accepted Taylor's apology, replying:
That means so much Taylor, thank you. @taylorswift13 ❤️❤️❤️— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 23, 2015
I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on. https://t.co/mx9pfIdnzT— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 23, 2015
She also sent a tweet to Katy Perry, who voiced her support for Nicki after the initial row (more on that later):
Taylor and Nicki’s ‘feud’ has been pored over by music fans and critics, a number of whom accused Taylor of ignoring Nicki’s attempts to comment on the history of racism and white privilege in the music industry.
Tweeting after the MTV VMAs nominations announcement, Nicki wrote:
If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. 😊😊😊— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween...an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Assuming that Minaj's tweets were aimed at her, Swift replied to Minaj saying "I've done nothing but love and support you."
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Taylor then chose not to respond to Nicki’s direct reply:
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Things then stepped up a notch when Katy Perry, who is believed to be the frenemy who inspired Tay’s ‘Bad Blood’, weighed in on the situation with a not-so-subtle subtweet:
Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman...— KATY PERRY (@katyperry) July 22, 2015
Now, the only remaining question is will Taylor also reply to Katy Perry? Watch this space. *grabs popcorn*
