Tom Bradby Tells Of Battle To Save Elderly Driver In Greece

ITV journalist Tom Bradby has described how he tried in vain to save the life of an elderly man who drove his car off a harbour in Greece.

The political editor of ITV News said he was "shaking with shock and anger" after just one of at least nine officials nearby entered the water to try to rescue the driver.

Bradby, who presents political series The Agenda, wrote on Twitter: "Just watched an elderly man commit suicide in Greece by driving his car off the harbour wall in Rafina.

"Dived in, tried to help, couldn't get him out. Completely shocking.

"Of the 9 or 10 customs officials and police on the quay only 1 went in to try and get him out as the car sank. The rest watched. Jesus.

"Am shaking with shock and anger. So much for the Greek holiday trade being business as usual."

Bradby, 48, has been announced as the new host of ITV's News at Ten in an overhaul of the co-host format featuring Mark Austin and Julie Etchingham.

The father-of-three, a former royal correspondent, won acclaim when he secured the first official interview with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after their engagement.
