A man has had his face "ripped off" after he was struck by a sofa which fell 130 feet from the penthouse of a luxury tower block in London.

The unidentified male in his 20s was walking past the W London Hotel on Wardour Street at around 9am Friday morning.

He was left writhing in agony in a pool of blood as shocked passers-by looked on.

"The man was a smartly-dressed guy just walking past.

"He looked like his face had been ripped off. It was raining and where the drops were hitting his face it was making him scream in agony."

A delivery driver tended to the man before paramedics arrived. He was later flown to hospital.

The cream sofa is believed to be part of outdoor furniture belonging to one of the privately owned lodgings on the building's roof.

The Met Police said in a statement: "Police were called at 08.54hrs on Friday 30 October to reports of a pedestrian injured in Wardour Street W1.

"At this early stage it is believed he was injured by a piece of furniture which fell from scaffolding.

"The man in his 20s was taken to an East London hospital by air ambulance. His injuries are said to be critical but stable."

The incident is being investigated by Health and Safety officers from Westminster council.
