Driver Killed In Collision Between Two Ambulances In Pwllheli

A crash between two ambulances in north Wales has left one driver dead and three people seriously injured.

An urgent response ambulance collided with a patient care service vehicle on a stretch of the A499 in Pwllheli, Gwynedd, shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

Paramedics in two air ambulances were scrambled to the scene along with two rapid response cars and three ambulances by road to treat the injured.

The driver of the patient care service vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust said.

Three people travelling in the urgent response ambulance were taken to the Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital where they are being treated for serious injuries, they added.

Staff at the Trust have been left "absolutely devastated" by the tragedy, its head of operations in North Wales, Sonia Thompson, said.

She added: "Our thoughts are with everyone involved.

"We're doing everything we can to support our affected colleagues, and are working hard to understand what happened."

Richard Lee, the Welsh Ambulance Service's director of operations, said their thoughts were with everyone affected and particularly with the family of the dead driver.

He added: "As an ambulance service we deal with road traffic accidents on a daily basis. These are always difficult for our staff to deal with, but even more so when they involve our colleagues.

"We have plans in place to support our staff in Pwllheli and the wider Gwynedd area over the coming days."
