Nicole Kidman has said having her own adopted children helped her relate to her character in the new film Lion.
The Australian actress, who has an adopted son and daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise, joined co-stars Dev Patel and Rooney Mara at the movie's world premiere in Toronto.
The drama tells the real-life story of Saroo Brierley, who was adopted by an Australian couple after being separated from his family in India aged five, and then located his original home using Google Earth 25 years later.
Kidman, who plays Mr Brierley's adopted mother, said she wanted to appear in the film because the story was "so powerful and true".
She said: "Obviously I have adopted children. It takes a village to raise children. The power of good love, there's nothing like it, and where it comes from and how you get it. But the nurturing quality of good love is extraordinary.
"The power of somebody wanting to find home, I think, is just a wonderful, cinematic story."
Kidman, 49, also has two biological daughters with her husband, singer Keith Urban.
At the premiere, Mara praised the performance of Slumdog Millionaire actor Patel, who portrays Mr Brierley in Lion.
"He went through such a transformation during this whole process," she said. "It was really cool to get to watch that.
"It was such a beautiful story. I couldn't believe it was a true story when I read it. I just wanted to be a part of it.
"It's such an uplifting film about the human spirit and about love and I just wanted to be part of something like that."
Lion will have its UK premiere on October 12.
