Dazzling Murmuration Of Starlings Caught On Camera Near Gretna

The moment thousands of starlings gathered together to perform a spectacular murmuration has been caught on camera.

The dazzling performance took place near Gretna, Scotland, with the small birds putting on the display as the sun went down.

Grouping together to form different shapes, the birds could be seen flying over their roosting site before suddenly swooping to the ground for the night.

Scientists have a number of theories around why they do it, which include safety in numbers from predators as well as keeping warm and exchanging information such as good feeding areas.

Murmurations can see up to 100,000 of the birds gather together with the natural wonder taking place all over the UK.

But the starling population has fallen by over 80% in recent years, meaning they are now on the critical list of UK birds most at risk.
