A goalkeeper has apologised after he was sent off for urinating during a non-league match, saying he was “in a very uncomfortable position”.
Salford City’s keeper Max Crocombe, 24, was shown the red card near the end of his side’s 2-1 victory over Bradford Park Avenue in the Vanarama National League North, at the West Yorkshire club’s Horsfall Stadium.
Crocombe said on social media after Saturday’s match: “I’d like to sincerely apologise for the incident today.
“I was in a very uncomfortable position and made an error of judgment which spoiled a great win.
“My intention was never to offend anyone and I’d like to apologise to both clubs and both sets of supporters and it won’t happen again. Max.”
Bradford Park Avenue said on its official Twitter feed during the game: “We can confirm that Crocombe has been sent off for urinating during the game. We are not joking.”
Earlier the club tweeted: “Red Card! This is bizarre. Salford goalkeeper Max Crocombe has been dismissed and no one knows why…”
Salford City posted: “Red Card! Crocombe see red for something off the ball. No one has a clue what has happened.”
Former England striker and BBC present Gary Lineker also took to Twitter in response to reference his embarrassing toilet incident in 1990 during a World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland.
Crocombe was born in New Zealand but moved to England at a young age and has played for a number of league and non-league clubs.
He has played for New Zealand at under-20 and under-23 levels.
Salford City is the club part-owned by former Manchester United stars Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs.
The official attendance at the match was 533.
