Suspect Wanted Over Crossbow Murder Was Neighbour Of Dead Man, Say Police

Police have said a man wanted for the crossbow murder and the father-of-three he is suspected of killing were neighbours.

Humberside Police said Shane Gilmer, 30, and his pregnant girlfriend Laura Sugden were attacked at their home in the village of Southburn, near Driffield, on Friday evening.

A manhunt was launched to find Anthony Lawrence, also known as Tony Howarth, who is 56, white and around 5ft 10in with cropped dark hair.

The force named him as being wanted on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

His blue Vauxhall Meriva has been located and officers put the village in lockdown and have been searching local woods.

Detective Chief Superintendent Judi Heaton told a news conference that Ms Sugden’s injuries were not life-threatening and that she and her unborn baby were in a stable condition.

Mr Gilmer, who was a well-liked member of his community and known for helping others according to reports, died at Hull Royal Infirmary on Saturday.

She said the couple and the suspect were neighbours who knew each other.

Asked if a crossbow was used in the attack, she said one was found at the scene and will be forensically examined.

The officer said police believed he had not left the country and were working on a number of lines of inquiry.

Although he was not thought to be a danger to the wider public, police urged anyone who sees Mr Lawrence to dial 999 and not approach him.

She said: “We are investigating a murder and an attempted murder here. Clearly this is someone who should not be approached by the public, but we do believe this was an isolated incident and these people were known to one another.”
