A one-year-old baby fell 30ft from the window of a third floor flat - and survived.

The tot had apparently crawled through the window of the property in the six-storey Downs Court block in Lower Clapton, east London before plunging 30 feet onto a flat roof.

Miraculously, he suffered only a broken jaw, cuts and bruises.

The little boy was spotted bleeding and shocked crawling on the flat roof after the fall - risking plummeting another 20ft drop.

Passers-by looked on in horror, before one raced into the building, climbed out of a first floor window and plucked the infant to safety.

Another member of the public then got a ladder and helped bring the baby down to safety.

The child, who has not been named, was described as 'blood soaked' at the scene. He was immediately taken to hospital, and police have launched an investigation.

Sharon Barrett, manager of the nearby Social Care 4U employment agency, witnessed the events and told the Daily Express:

"Everybody was screaming and then the mother ran down on to the street. She was very

distressed – she was saying she'd just been in the toilet."

"A guy got on to the ledge to get the baby and somebody flagged down a passing police van."

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said last night: "The one-year-old male infant was conveyed to an east London hospital, where it was established that he had sustained a broken jaw. His injuries were not deemed life-threatening. Inquiries into the incident are continuing."

What a terrible accident - but HOW lucky was the baby to have survived with minor injuries?
