A mother has been arrested after leaving her baby for an hour and a half in a scorching hot car while she shopped in the Boxing Day sales in Australia, where it is high summer.

Security cameras filmed the mother winding down the windows of her vehicle in the car park at the Westfield Doncaster shopping centre before going into the store, leaving her 17-month-old baby behind on a day where temperatures reached 29.4C.

Half an hour later a family spotted the baby and freed him by reaching inside the car through the open windows.

They alerted security who put a call out for the mother inside the store, but she continued shopping and did not appear for another hour.

Police said the woman will be charged for leaving her child, and for driving while only holding a provisional driving license.
