Market Cross at Bingham in Nottinghamshire, England

Looking to move? Trying to find the ideal place in which to raise your family? Well forget the affluent Surrey countryside, or the rolling Cotswold hills - a survey has revealed the country's family friendly hot-spot is Bingham.

Er, where? Indeed - it's a new one on us too, but the Nottinghamshire market town with a population of 9,000 has beaten villages in Berkshire and Oxfordshire to take the des-res crown.

The survey of family friendly locations by Family Investments looked at the quality of schools, childcare provisions, affordability, and crime levels in towns and villages around England and Wales. It also took in the prominence of green spaces, theatres, and leisure centres.

Researcher discovered the top 10 places to live were:

Bingham, Nottinghamshire

Crowthorne, Berkshire;

Winscombe, Somerset;

Colyton, Devon;

Oakham, Rutland;

Wokingham, Berkshire;

Poynton, Cheshire;

Swanland, Yorkshire;

Faringdon, Oxfordshire

Dunnington, Yorkshire.

Bountiful Bingham was found to have 77 per cent of GCSE pupils achieving A* to C grades compared with the national average of 43 per cent, as well as boasting affordable house prices and a wide range of clubs and social groups.

Kate Moore from Family Investments said that all its attributes made it a 'winning location' in which to bring up a family.

"It's set in a relatively rural location but is a large enough town to have good amenities and the locals tell us there's a strong community spirit," she said.

"Every parent will have a different idea about what makes the ideal location to bring up their family but we have tried to be as comprehensive as possible in measuring a huge range of factors to come up with a list which reflects the attributes parents tell us are most important."

Kate added that one of the 'most noticeable trends' in this year's report was the increased number of locations in the Midlands and northern England rising up the rankings compared to last year.

"This largely reflects the shift in house price trends over the past year resulting in increased affordability of property outside of the South of England. Lancashire for example scored well in this year's report with three of the top 20 postcodes located in the county," she said.
