A boy of 15 has been charged with murder after a teenager died from the knife wounds he sustained during an attack on a London bus.

Derek Boateng passed away on his 16th birthday after he was stabbed on the route 393 bus near Highbury New Park in North London on Wednesday.

Despite receiving treatment at the scene and being taken to hospital by air ambulance, he died from his injures.

The Guardian reports that the boy charged with Derek's murder is from Havering, North East London. He is due to appear at Highbury Corner youth court today.

Derek Boeteng's sister Gifty, 29, told reporters that he was a loving brother.

"I could not have had a better brother. He would do things for anyone and ask for nothing in return. He was the family handyman and could fix anything," she told the Evening Standard.

Scotland Yard said a postmortem would be carried out in due course.
