Gerry Burks has become the oldest dad in Britain at the age of 74.

The former HGV driver from Louth, Lincolnshire, turns 75 tomorrow but his wife, Dawn, 41, has just given birth to their son Ryan.

Gerry told the Sun he puts his success down to bananas - and his love for his wife.

He said: "I'm so proud. I feel like the luckiest man alive. I think it's wonderful.

"People might say things about my age, but I look after myself.

"I'm young at heart, don't drink or smoke now, and Dawn loves cooking. Her pasta bake keeps me in good shape.

"I eat lots of bananas and always have done - sometimes a couple a day. I don't eat much salt and have home-cooked food.

"Maybe that's what's kept my body healthy. But I think the love of a good woman, my Dawn, has a lot to do with it, too. I'm just doing what comes naturally."

The couple have another son, Daniel, who is six.

When Ryan was born he weighed just 5lb 7oz, so was kept in the special care baby unit for a while, but is now home with his parents and brother.

Hospital staff apparently mistook Gerry for Dawn's father - which I guess must happen fairly often.

But Dawn says Gerry is a "natural" as a father. She told the Sun: "He was born to be a father, he is so good at it and so caring.

"I am extremely lucky to have two beautiful children with the man that I love.

"Gerry helps out and Ryan is just as happy with his dad as he is with me. We love and respect each other.

"Gerry is not some dithering old man who has fathered a child he can't look after. He's fit and strong and has a youthful outlook.

"Everyone here thinks we're a great couple and loving family.

"If Gerry lives well into his 90s the boys will be grown up. Besides, I may go before he does, no one can predict these things."

She says age is "just a number".

What do you think? Is it irresponsible to have a child at such an advanced age?
