This heroic kitty proved that cats could be man's best friend when it saved a four-year-old boy from a vicious dog attack.

In the amazing CCTV footage, Jeremy Triantafilo can be seen playing with his bike outside his family's home in Bakersfield, California. Unbeknownst to the little boy, a neighbour's dog is loose and roaming the street just yards away.

Without warning, the eight-month-old chow/labrador mix appears from behind a parked car and yanks Jeremy - who has a mild form of autism - off his bike and onto the ground. It seems the boy is in imminent danger of being seriously injured - but then something incredible happens.

As the dog tries to drag him across the road, a cat races into view and charges at the dog, even pouncing on it.

It doesn't take long for the mutt to get the message that, although the cat is far smaller, she is not messing around. The dog drops the boy and takes off at full speed with the cat in hot pursuit. Satisfied, she then turns back to stand by Jeremy as his mum arrives on the scene.

The brave feline is Tara, the family's four-year-old rescue cat, who appears just in time to save her owners' son from serious injury. Jeremy required only minor stitches thanks to his pet's fearless intervention.

His mum, Erica, and dad, Roger, looked at security footage to piece together what had happened and were amazed by what they saw.

Erica explained that she had been watering a tree nearby when she heard her son's screams, and by the time she arrived on the scene, the drama was already over.

"Before I could even get there, my cat clobbered him," she told Fox News. "She saved the day."
