A new survey from the UK's leading dating site for married people IllicitEncounters.com thinks it could be!

The dating site has revealed the shopping habits of people looking for an extra-marital tryst. The survey of their 800,000 members were questioned on their supermarket preferences and food shopping habits.

I must admit, I doubt Richard Curtis is penning a romantic comedy called "Houmous and Olives" the story of star crossed lovers meeting amongst the cereals and tinned soup display of the local supermarket. However Illicit Encounters seems to think the weekly food shop is a prime (rib) opportunity to catch someone's eye.

According to the survey Waitrose topped the poll for men, with quality renowned Sainsbury's topping the list for women looking to spice up their love lives.

Don't get me wrong, being more concerned with one's health and diet is often a dead giveaway for an affair, shopping for healthier or buying organic food can indicate a new relationship and a keenness to take extra care of yourself and your appearance.

It is natural to want to look and feel our best when meeting someone new, we have an opportunity to be viewed in a totally different light by this person and have a clean slate, we can approach them with all the knowledge from previous relationships and avoid previous pitfalls.

I think the results are more indicative of the demographic of the site, the men are typically high earners, motivated and driven. Waitrose appeals to them as the quality choice for food shopping, whilst the female members are also typically high earners and motivated they see Sainsbury's as an ideal combination of both quality and value for money.

Illicit Encounters also claims that those members who had started an extra-marital tryst are given to eating healthier and spend more money on "organic" and quality brands. They are more likely to shun junk food and favour fruit, choosing a nice pear over chocolate.

However this could be as much about a change of routine as it is health driven; trying new foods and breaking eating habits is intrinsically linked to a change of mind-set when deciding to embark on an affair.

Even if you feel your marriage is nearing its "best before date" I would suggest taking some sage advice before approaching people in the supermarket, they may not all be looking for an affair at this time. But if you do muster up the strength to approach someone it is fair to surmise that any affair started in fruit and vegetable section is likely to be as perishable as a week old avocado.

I guess the one thing that we can take from the survey is that despite celebrity endorsements and advertisements nobody is looking for an affair whilst wandering the isles of Iceland, as they came bottom of the list.

*I apologies for the puns I appreciate they are a little shiitake, I'm going to go cold turkey for a while.
