East Coast Meteor Strike As 'Bright As A Burning Plane' Reported - But Did It Actually Happen?

Did Hundreds Of People Just Imagine The Same Meteor?
|

A meteor so bright it was mistaken for a burning plane was spotted across America's East Coast last week - or was it?

The American Meteor Association logged calls from hundreds of people last week claiming to have seen the fireball streaking across the sky.

AMS's 'heat map'

But intriguingly not one of them appears to have taken a photo of it or filmed it.

Adding to the mystery is the Daily Mail's coverage of the event which quotes a number of people's reactions to it.

Thing is, these quotes are actually referring to a meteor that streaked across the sky in May of last year.

The same meteor acknowledged by one rather humourless tweeter here...

So what really happened? Was there really a meteor last week or was it all just a social media-fuelled mass hallucination?

Answers on a postcard...
