Gone are the days when all you had to take to the beach was your towel and your book - these days sunseekers take to their smartphones to 'check in' their location.

Facebook has published a list of the beaches in Britain which receive the most check-ins - but which sandy heaven came top of the list?

Beginning the countdown is Woolacombe, which as you can see, gets a little crowded when the sun comes out. There are loads of campsites if you fancy an impromptu, cheap break, or cosy b&bs and boutique hotels if not. The area also holds the England for Excellence Gold Award for best family resort. With 15 miles of sandy beach to play with, romantics should head to the quieter stretches of beach along East Anglia, and families should go to Winterton-on-Sea for bouncy castles and donkey rides. (credit:PA)

A great one for kids, this. There are donkey rides, and if those are too cheesy for you, pick a quiet spot for a picnic or take a walk along the pier. (credit:PA)

Sandbanks is one of the most exclusive beach areas in Britain - and by that we mean you need a lot of moola to afford a house here. The water is clean and clear, and it's a big 'un too - great for walking dogs, building sand castles and stretching out for a snooze. (credit:PA)
4. Pleasure Beach Resort, Blackpool (07 of09)

A British classic - but while the beach may still be popular, Blackpool came under fire for having some of the dirtiest hotels in Britain recently. It also ended up in the second place due to people checking it in under a different name. (credit:PA)
3. Weymouth Beach, Dorset(08 of09)

With the heatwave set to continue over the weekend, a lot of holidaymakers are expected to flock to Britain's beaches.

Since the heatwave, Expedia revealed tour operators have seen UK beach bookings shoot up 119%, with Bournemouth at the top the list of UK escapes, compared with the same time last year. The Guardian reported that Eastbourne saw a 100% rise and Torquay in Devon received an 81% rise in bookings.
