A family's holiday has ended in tragedy after their 20-month-old daughter was run over and left trapped under a car at a campsite.

The little girl was injured at the Lane Foot Farm campsite near Keswick in the Lake District. She was treated at the scene by doctors and paramedics after briefly becoming trapped under the VW Touran.

The Pride of Cumbria Air Ambulance then airlifted her to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where she is said to have leg, pelvis and head injuries.

The police said her condition was 'serious but stable'.

A Cumbria police spokesman said that the girl's family were 'obviously in a state of shock' and had been taken to Newcastle to be at her bedside.

The BBC reports that family had been on holiday from their home in Lincoln when the accident happened at around 10am on Sunday.

The police collision investigation unit are said to have now examined the scene and will be speaking to the driver of the Touran in due course.
