A young mum was subjected to a brutal attack by a gang of women in front of her small children.

The 23-year-old was left with broken bones in her face after being assaulted by the gang as she walked through Rochdale in Manchester.

The vicious group reportedly only stopped when one of the children shouted at them to leave her mum alone.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the woman was walking down a footpath between two streets with her five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son when the unprovoked attack occurred.

She was pushed to the ground from behind and then kicked and punched.

Detective Constable Russ Clarke said the mum had sustained fractures to her eye and cheekbone as well as other facial and body injuries and that her 'young children had to watch the violent and unprovoked attack take place'.

"As you can imagine this has had a profound effect on everyone involved," he said. "I ask that anyone who knows the identity of the attackers or who has information as to what happened to contact the police as soon as possible so that those responsible can be identified and brought to justice."

He said that the women 'clearly thought nothing of attacking this woman in front of her children' who were 'now having to deal with the consequences'.

He said that anyone with information should call Rochdale police station or Crimestoppers.
