A GP has been jailed for six years after he took more than 800 indecent photographs of women and children at his surgery.

Barend Delport, 55, from Swanley, Kent, subjected patients to inappropriate and unnecessary examinations at his surgery. He then took photos, claiming he would use them to build a case against midwives he said had failed in their care.

He also called one of his young victims his 'little girlfriend' and gave her money and sweets.

His youngest victim was just 18 months old.

His abuse only came to light when a mother questioned why he was intimately examining her daughter when she was only complaining of a stomach ache.

Delport admitted 26 charges at Maidstone Crown Court. Jailing him, Judge Philip Statman said it was 'difficult to imagine a greater breach of trust.

He added: "We trust our GPs with our health and, even more significantly, we trust them with the health of our children. What you did for utterly spurious reasons was to use your position as a trusted GP to touch and photograph your victims."
