Mel C has banned her five-year-old daughter from watching Rihanna's music videos - because they're too sexual.

The 40-year-old mum-of-one says that pop has become increasingly raunchy since she and her Spice Girl bandmates championed the empowering message of 'Girl Power', and she wants to protect her daughter Scarlet from the sexualised images for as long as possible.

"My girl Scarlet is a big fan of Rihanna, but I won't let her watch the videos – they're too sexual," Mel, 40, told The Mirror.

"I protect my daughter from it while I can, but she's growing up fast.

"For me it's almost like what we did with Girl Power has gone too far the other way, which defeats the object. I appreciate that it's a different generation now, but I don't consider that empowering."

This isn't the first time Mel has criticised Rihanna for behaving in a manner that is inappropriate' for her young fans.

In 2011 she said: "It is inappropriate. Rihanna has responsibility and although culture's always changing, it's changed too much. It needs to be dealt with. It's reached saturation point, we owe it to our kids to protect them."

Mel added that Rihanna might not understand where she's coming from because she's not a mother herself:

"I love Rihanna, I think she's a f****** brilliant artist, with great songs, a great record and she looks fantastic... but she's not a mum. Maybe if she becomes one she'll feel different. I hope so anyway."

Mel previously spoke to Parentdish about her concerns over the lack of suitable role models in pop for young girls like Scarlet:

"It would seem that the order of the day in pop at the moment is to shock – often with sexy dancing like twerking," she said. "But the thing is, Madonna was doing that in the eighties, so really it's nothing new, is it?

"I think it's a shame that there isn't more of a variety of healthy role models for girls in pop.

"However, my little girl likes Little Mix, and I'm really happy about that because as a band I think they're the closest there has been to the Spice Girls - in that they're very youthful and innocent. They are glamorous, but not uber-glamorous and sexy; they still look like young girls."
