A woman who was reunited with her long-lost mother got the shock of her life when she discovered the father of her child was her BROTHER.

The Brazilian couple – called Adriana, 39, and Leandro, 37 - have lived together for seven years. They regard themselves as husband and wife, although they haven't legally married.

They had spent their lives trying to find their respective mothers, who were both called Maria.

They had both been abandoned when they were babies, the Mail reports.

But neither ever imagined that the women they had both been searching for could have been the same person.

Adriana hadn't seen her mum since she was just one, when she left home leaving Adriana to be raised by her dad.

And Leandro found out when he was eight years old that his mum had also abandoned him.

The woman he knew as his mum was actually his step-mother.

When they grew up, Leandro stayed in Sao Paulo, south east Brazil, while Adriana moved away to work as a housemaid.

She was married for 15 years and had three children.

But the pair met for the first time 10 years ago after Adriana's marriage broke down and she moved back to her home town where they fell in love and moved in together.

After having their daughter, Adriana continued her search for her mum and contacted a radio station to ask for help.

Her appeal was a huge success and this week mum and daughter were reunited live on air.

But at the end of the interview on Radio Globo's 'The Time Is Now' programme, which specialises in finding lost relatives, mum Maria revealed she also had a son who didn't know her, called Leandro.

It then became clear that Leandro was the very same man living with Adriana. As the news sank in,

Adriana wept uncontrollably, saying: "I don't believe that you're telling me this."

She added: "Now I'm scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn't want me any more. I love him so much."

Adriana and Leandro told Radio Globo they would stay together, despite the bombshell that they are actually brother and sister.

Adriana said: "Only death is going to separate us. All this happened because God wanted it to happen.

"Of course it would have been different if we had known all this before, but we didn't and we fell in love.

"We thought it was funny that both our mothers had the same name, but it is a common name so we just thought it was a coincidence.

"At first we were really knocked by it all. But we had a family meeting and told everyone that we are going to stay (unofficial) husband and wife, whatever anyone might think.

"We have so many plans together, nothing's going to break us up, nothing."

The couple said they don't blame their mother for leaving them and have spoken with her a number of times since.
